There is an interesting piece of info in the article 'One Laptop Per Child' Hit With Production Glitch, Shortages. The cost per laptop, which was supposed to be a $100 per laptop, has risen to around $188 per piece. The interesting thing to note is that the cost of standard PCs has declined to such an extent that one can get a Linux based Everex laptop for just around $298 from Wal-Mart.
Having said that, I still think the OLPC project is great owing to the fact the the laptops have been designed keeping children in mind - they are durable and run on just 2 watts of power. More info on OLPC here.
